Berkshire

The River Kennet has always been famous for its fish ever since John of Gaunt granted fishing rights to the town in the 14th century. As it was said: ‘A fayre river which yieldeth store of fishes and especially trowtes.’

He gave the town a horn, which summoned all the holders to attend the town court: a tradition maintained today by the Hocktide Festival.

The Bear Hotel in the High Street was given to both Anne of Cleves and Catherine Howard. William of Orange learned of his accession to the throne while staying here in 1688. The town had another tradition of presenting the red rose of Lancaster to any sovereign passing through.

Up on the Downs, Ashdown House near Lambourn is a unique example of an 18th century hunting lodge. Its stairway holds many fine 17th century paintings.

The house was built for the Queen of Bohemia by the Earl of Craven.
